The IELTS General Training test assesses your English language proficiency in practical, everyday contexts. Here are the key components of the IELTS General Training test:

  1. Listening:

    • You’ll listen to four recordings by native English speakers.

    • These recordings cover various contexts, such as everyday conversations, monologues about local facilities, educational discussions, and academic lectures.

    • The test evaluates your ability to understand main ideas, specific factual information, and the opinions and attitudes of speakers.

    • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for transferring answers.

    • Question types: Multiple choice, matching, labeling, completion, and sentence completion.

  2. Reading:

    • You’ll read three different passages.

    • The content varies between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests.

    • For General Training, the passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, suitable for a non-specialist audience.

    • The passages cover descriptive, factual, discursive, and analytical topics.

    • Duration: Approximately 60 minutes, including time for transferring answers.

    • Question types: Fill gaps, match headings, complete sentences, short answers, and multiple choice.

  3. Writing:

    • Task 1: Write a letter (usually semi-formal or informal) based on a given situation. It could be a request, complaint, or explanation.

    • Task 2: Write an essay in response to a specific question or topic.

    • Duration: 60 minutes.

    • Word count: At least 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2.

  4. Speaking:

    • A face-to-face interview with an examiner.

    • Part 1: Introduction and general questions (about yourself, your home, studies, etc.).

    • Part 2: Receive a topic card and have 1 minute to prepare, followed by a 1-2 minute talk.

    • Part 3: Discussion related to the topic in Part 2.

    • Duration: 11-14 minutes.
